Closed borders, tightened screws: Rethinking research & knowledge production on Russia

📅 November 15, 2024, from 14:00 – 15:30

📌 Tallinn University, Room M-328

What happens to research when borders close, and access is lost?

As the geopolitical landscape around Russia shifts dramatically, so too does our ability to understand it. The Eur-Asian Border Lab Forum invites you to its inaugural event, a timely roundtable confronting the urgent and complex challenges of researching Russia under restricted access and severe security concerns.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, traditional avenues for gathering knowledge on Russia have been disrupted, sparking a crisis in Russian studies. Researchers, journalists, and policymakers now face ethical, methodological, security and personal dilemmas in obtaining reliable insights. This roundtable brings together researchers and practitioners with diverse experiences to discuss how to produce knowledge in a world with hardening borders.

Core questions to be addressed

👉How can we responsibly gather information and perspectives from Russia given restricted access?

👉What new methodologies can address the evolving needs of Russian studies today?

👉How can we ethically and emotionally navigate the realities of researching a country increasingly out of reach?
