Estonia has begun installing metal gates and drive-through barriers on the Narva border bridge to tighten security and prevent unauthorised crossings. The upgrades, part of a €2 million plan, aim to boost crisis readiness and migration control at key checkpoints along the eastern border. Similar barriers are planned for Luhamaa and Koidula by late 2025.

The new infrastructure comes amid growing geopolitical tensions and concerns over irregular migration flows. Authorities say the gates will help manage movement more effectively in the event of sudden surges at the border. The installation does not currently restrict regular cross-border traffic but signals Estonia’s continued push to reinforce its eastern frontier.
