In a recent interview with ERR News (Estonian Public Broadcasting), Frontex Deputy Executive Director Uku Särekanno emphasised that establishing a regional command centre in Narva-Jõesuu would send a symbolic message: Estonia’s border with Russia is also a European border. The proposed centre would coordinate Nordic, Baltic, and Eastern border operations, housing 30-40 staff and overseeing up to 400 personnel. It would also host tactical training programs and potentially expand EU-wide border guard education efforts. Särekanno highlighted the continued threat of “migration instrumentalisation” on the EU’s eastern flank, as well as risks tied to arms trafficking. He also noted that a new EU-wide Entry/Exit System launching this autumn will enhance automated border control and personal risk analysis.
