Researcher
John Buchanan is a researcher at Tallinn University’s School of Humanities. His research focuses on the intersection of illicit drugs, local state formation, and armed conflict in Southeast Asia. His publications include Militias in Myanmar, an overview of the systems of militias in Myanmar, published by the Asia Foundation. His current research project looks at opium production in mainland Southeast Asia. John received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Washington – Seattle. Previously, he held postdoctoral fellowships at Yale University’s Agrarian Studies Program, the Harvard University Asia Center, and Tallinn University.
