Jussi P Laine has published a new article “The Elastic Sky Airspace Volumetric Bordering and Geopolitical Crisis” in Global Studies Quarterly. The study explains how airspace is not a neutral overhead expanse but a dynamic and politically sensitive environment shaped by infrastructure algorithms and geopolitical pressure. Laine shows that air borders are assembled through legal technical and commercial systems and that they regulate mobility long before aircraft enter the sky. He also demonstrates how airspace can rapidly expand or close in response to crises which has become visible in recent conflict driven rerouting across Europe and Asia. The article invites border scholars to rethink sovereignty in three dimensions and to examine how algorithmic systems now shape aerial mobility.
