Daniele Monticelli 

Daniele Monticelli is a Professor of Translation Studies and Semiotics at Tallinn University’s School of Humanities. His research is characterized by a wide, interdisciplinary range of interests which include translation history, semiotics of culture and contemporary critical theory.

He has a long experience of participation in collaborative research projects in the fields of semiotics, translation studies, intellectual history and is currently the project leader of the research grant “Translation in History, Estonia 1850-2010: Texts, Agents, Institutions and Practices” (2021-2025). He has worked on the notion of border from a theoretical perspective, studying the semiotic and political functions of the construction and deconstruction of borders in culture. He has studied and developed Juri Lotman’s understanding of cultural boundaries, their establishment, crossing and violation as fundamental aspects of cultural dynamism.
